{"id":244,"date":"2009-06-29T18:16:30","date_gmt":"2009-06-29T18:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alisonpowell.ca\/?p=244"},"modified":"2009-06-29T18:16:30","modified_gmt":"2009-06-29T18:16:30","slug":"hacking-the-city-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alisonpowell.ca\/?p=244","title":{"rendered":"Hacking the City &#8211; redux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was delighted to read that the Personal Democracy Forum&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/personaldemocracy.com\/pdf-2009-schedule\">2009 Conference <\/a>(twitter <a href=\"http:\/\/personaldemocracy.com\/twitter\/\">slurp<\/a> here) includes a Birds of a Feather meetup on the topic of &#8220;Hacking the City.&#8221;\u00a0 I first heard community technologists use this phrase in 2005, when Mike wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/mtl3p.ilesansfil.org\/blog\/archives\/2005\/09\/26\/building_soccer_fields_in_downtown_montreal.html\">post<\/a> about how community Wi-Fi is a way of hacking the social space of cities.\u00a0 What he was referring to was the way that community interventions in provision of communications infrastructure could change how people socialized &#8211; since so much of our interactions are mediated by various types of networks.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;hacking the city&#8221; like so many good ideas, has taken on another life.\u00a0 It&#8217;s now used to describe how networked technologies can be harnessed so that citizens can take action in their own cities.
